Partizan Vs Red Star in Belgrade

When we were in Novi Sad we were in two minds whether or not to go and see a football game in Belgrade. I heard so many stories about the soccer games there. ‘They are a lively lot,’ I was told. With worried faces in response to my wish I couldn’t help but feel curious about what it would be like to see a real live match between Partizan and Red Star.  I have seen matches on YouTube and how the fanatic fans fill the stadium with fire bombs and smoke. And cry and sing for their beloved teams for the full course of the match. I had to see for myself. On this particular Easter weekend we ventured into Belgrade by bus from Novi Sad to finally see a game. It turned out that it was a very significant match and a decider for which team will be champion of Serbia and have the right to play in the European Champions League. Ultimately it was the most fun I had at any soccer stadium. There’s nothing like a soccer match in Belgrade.

Ne postoji ništa poput fudbalske utakmice u Beogradu.

A few Partizan fans make it to the stands to get a taste of the atmosphere early in the day. The word is out that Red Star fans whose stand is located on opposing side of Partizan stand on the other end of the stadium on the north decided not to show in protest of the game being held on Easter Saturday.

Every game is alternatively played in different home stadiums. The Partizan Stadium holds big tradition being the first place that an Ex- Yugoslavian game was played. The Red Star Stadium is located 300 meters away from the Partizan Stadium.

You can see the empty stand in the background from the absent protest of the Red Star fans because of celebration of Easter.  Partizan fans are always on the south of the stadium and Red Star fans on the north.

The fans were well-organized and they are called Grave Diggers. The leader of the fan club led the rehearsed songs and chants that were drummed. They continued non-stop throughout the 90 minute duration of the game. The energy filled the stadium and it was a lot of fun.

The end of the game and firm crowd control that stopped the enthusiastic fans from entering the field. Partizan won the game and the score was 1-0. The first half was dominated by Red Star who didn’t capitalize on their chances of goal. Partizan lacked a runner and a supporting attacker. Though in the second half they seemed to push up their talented midfielders and boosted the defense. Back in the days of my football we were told that a good attack was a good defense. This worked in favor for Partizan in the second half and after they scored their goal they put on some substitutes that gave a glimpse of the new talent they have. These players seemed just what Partizan needed. Good fast runners who could play with the ball through the center that dazzled the opposition. I can’t emphasize enough how much I enjoyed that game and would definitely go again.

Saveti :

  • Nemojte nositi puno nakita.
  • Ponesite identifikaciju .

Tips:

  • Hide your black and white clothes for Partizan or red and white for Red Star until you come to the stand to barrack for your team.
  • Don’t wear any jewelry.
  • Don’t take any coins because they will be confiscated.
  • Don’t take a bag or money other than what you will need.
  • Take identification.
  • Relax and have fun.

A game in the fans stand costs 6 euros on the north and south stands and 8-18 euros on East and West stands. For 18 euro you have a central seat where you have the best view of the game. Normally there is no problem buying a ticket at the stadium.

It is a wonderful derby that usually receives bad publicity. It was good to see a blogger’s perspective. View my thoughts on the game published on 24sata click here.

Very interesting but little scary. I know teams in Europe tend to take sports more seriously than here in the states. Glad you had fun. One of the pictures looks like there is a fire in the stands. What is that? It’s the 3rd photo up.

I get nervous when my husband wears his Yankee (NY) ball cap in Chicago or Boston!! So I think all of you tips are good ones!

    Best,
    Marilyn

    • It is a fire torch and is not permitted in the stadium but somehow they sneak it in. The fire department is there and security ready with buckets of water to put the fire out. But the fire didn’t do any harm that day and security is getting tighter. My advice is to get a place in the east or west of the stadium. In saying this as an onlooker the fans were energetic and the risk wasn’t evident. I saw young children in the fan stands. What sparked my interest was the remarkable way the fans were synchronized and had all that energy to spend the whole match.

With any travel that you do you need to always be careful and take precautions all over the world. What is it like in the USA?

      Thanks for your comments.
